Feature #5

The North Bay Bonsai Society

The North Bay Bonsai Society was formed in November 1992. Two friends were sitting at a table, pruning a Juniper and listening to Japanese Music as ambience. The discussion proceeded to discuss forming a Club, holding meetings and workshops. The meetings were held at the home of Mr. Lorne Cutts for many years. Membership gradually grew to 13 members.

Meetings were held the first Monday of each month. Demonstrations showed how to prune, shape, wire, repot and care for various trees. Membership grew and Lorne sold his house, moved to North Bay, so meetings are now held in the Blossom Room at Cassellholme. Members are encouraged to bring in their own trees for discussion and then determine shape and then wire.

We have excellent sources in the north for our spring field trips when we collect Larch, Black Pine, Cedars, and other native trees. We participate in a spring and fall plant sale, which raises money for our Club. This enables us to purchase books, soil, wire, pots and videos for Members’ use. We are visible in the Municipality of Callander as our Society maintains a Japanese style garden in Memory Tree Park, maintained by the Callander Horticultural Society.
